What's your Body Mass Indicator or BMI? Why is your body mass so important? It basically tells you how much fat you are carrying along with your bones and muscle. Too much fat tells your doctor that you are at higher risk for heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. High blood pressure can lead to stroke. By looking at your BMI,your doctor can advise you (hopefully) when you are just in the slightly overweight range that you need to control your weight. Knowing your risks and working with your doctor lowers your health risks. As an educated patient, you know you will do the best possible job to maintain your body at a healthy range. Once you cross over into an unhealthy state, you add additional costs in healthcare including meds, testing and chronic diseases associated with obesity. Are you height and weight proportional? (HWP) Check out this web links to find out what your BMI or body mass indicator is. Normal ranges are given so you can find out just where you are. http://www.cc.ysu.edu/~dmsewell/hwp.cgi http://nhlbisupport.com/bmi/
