Impact of environmental factors on Alpha-1 Patients.

The impact of environmental factors on Alpha-1patients. This study looked at the impact of environmental exposures and onset of symptoms of lung illness in Alpha-1 patients.

The contribution of occupational dust, fume, and gas inhalation to development of chronic respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation has been documented in cross-sectional studies in the general population, occupational cross-sectional studies, occupational cohort studies, experimental studies, as well as rigorous reviews of the literature. However, the occurrence and severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at a given level of exposure are far from uniform. Many individuals never develop lung disease despite breathing unclean air, whereas others become impaired with comparable levels of exposure. This supports the possibility of a combination of effects from both environmental exposures and genetic factors. From a clinical standpoint, it is difficult to know how to advise patients who are at risk for COPD about the potential effects of occupational exposures on their long-term health.
