    Research Follow-up
    on Newborn Screening in Sweden


    This follow up report on newborn screening offers parents some firm supporting evidence to emphasize the importance of not smoking to their Alpha effected children (or any child). The original screening took place from 1972-1974 and involved 129 Alpha deficient children. This report comes from Thorax.

    American Lung Association

    The American Lung Association offers information about Alpha-1 emphysema on their web site. In addition, one can find out about their activities to prevent teen smoking, limiting environmental pollution, services to the community through smoking cessation, occupational hazards to the breathing-challenged individual and life style changes that promote healthier living with lung disease.

They may not be currently conducting research on Alpha-1, but are listed as centers who have listed themselves as conducting studies on it.
